But dig a little deeper and themes of state-sponsored fascism, elevated gods, the perils of war, and the construction of identity all shine through. Formal Ball: The Fashionista's Masked Ball
Put on your “Blue Suede Shoes” and get in “Vogue”. The Fashionista’s Masked Ball is coming up at AnimeUSA 2014. You’ll waltz, swing and cha-cha the night away to the most fashionable songs we can find and only the most stylish décor will grace our ballroom.  Masks will be provided on a first come first serve basis; but as always, you can make your own.

We request that no masks cover your entire head. Since there is an active dance floor, having full use of your peripheral vision will be critical. A helpful tip for those of you who have glasses and aren’t sure how to get a mask to work but would like to make or wear one: You can enlarge the holes where the string goes so that it will fit the arms of your glasses and possibly enlarge the eye holes as well.

The dress code is the same as it always has been. Semi-formal to formal. Long formal outfits cannot have anything that trails behind, as it’s a hazard to the other dancers. No blue Jeans, sneakers, mini skirts, mesh shirts, crop tops, work boots, t-shirts, tank tops etc…. Formal cosplay is also welcome.

Because it’s a fashion theme, we understand that people may want to wear fashionable pumps. PLEASE keep the heels short. Take it from some of our experienced ballroom dancers and a lovers of 6+ inch heels. The higher the heel, the more difficult it is to dance and the more likely you are to get hurt and miss the rest of the show. Cha-Cha and Swing are super fun and faster than the waltz’s you’re used to. A high heel will make it difficult to keep your balance, and your movement will be restricted because your ankles won’t move as freely as they do in a shorter heel.

We will have dance liaisons roaming the floor like we did last year. To make them more recognizable, they will be clearly marked with a corsage to indicate that they are part of the ball staff and you can safely dance with them. These liaisons are well versed in ballroom dance and will be introduced at the dance lesson prior to the ball, and right before the ball itself. The liaisons are there to make sure you can make the most of your time at the dance, so don’t be shy if they invite you onto the floor, or if you’re eager to get out there, feel free to ask them yourself!
